The truck is the easy part. Here's the paperwork that follows you to a new San Diego address, with the official links.

Utilities

  • SDG&E: start, stop or transfer service online. You may be asked to verify your identity in person.
  • City of San Diego water: request start service up to 10 business days ahead, or call (619) 515-3500. Stop service has its own online form.

DMV: 10 days

California requires you to report a new address to the DMV within 10 days. You can do it online. The DMV doesn't automatically mail a new license, and it can pass the change along to the Secretary of State for your voter record.

Voting

Re-register at registertovote.ca.gov whenever your address changes. Registration closes 15 days before an election.

Moving expenses and taxes

At the federal level, the moving expense deduction and exclusion have been permanently eliminated except for active-duty military on a permanent change of station and certain intelligence-community employees.

California still allows a moving expense deduction on Form FTB 3913 if your new workplace is at least 50 miles farther from your old home than your old workplace was, and you work full time for at least 39 weeks. Military PCS moves are exempt from both tests. This is general information. Check with a tax professional for your situation.
